TMJ Massage Therapy

Restore Comfort. Reduce Jaw Pain. Improve Function.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Massage Therapy is a specialized treatment designed to relieve pain, reduce muscle tension, and improve the function of the jaw, face, head, and neck. Many jaw-related symptoms actually originate from tight or overworked muscles surrounding the jaw, making massage therapy an effective treatment option for many individuals experiencing TMJ dysfunction.

Your massage therapist will perform a thorough assessment to determine which muscles and structures may be contributing to your symptoms before developing a personalized treatment plan.

TMJ Massage May Help With:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding of the jaw
  • Difficulty opening or closing the mouth
  • Jaw locking
  • Teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism)
  • Facial pain or muscle tension
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Ear pain or a feeling of fullness in the ears
  • Pain while chewing or speaking

What to Expect During Treatment

Your treatment may include a combination of techniques focused on restoring normal movement and reducing muscular tension, including:

  • Massage therapy for the jaw, face, scalp, neck, and shoulders
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Myofascial release
  • Gentle stretching and joint mobilization
  • Postural assessment and correction strategies
  • Home care recommendations and therapeutic exercises

For some clients, treatment may also include intraoral (inside the mouth) massage to access muscles that cannot be effectively treated externally. This technique is only performed by therapists with specialized training, requires your informed consent, and is always conducted using appropriate protective equipment and the highest professional standards. You may decline intraoral treatment at any time.

Benefits of TMJ Massage Therapy

Many clients experience:

  • Reduced jaw pain and muscle tension
  • Improved jaw mobility and range of motion
  • Fewer headaches and facial pain episodes
  • Reduced teeth clenching and grinding
  • Easier chewing and speaking
  • Improved posture and neck mobility
  • Greater overall comfort and quality of life

Is TMJ Massage Right for You?

TMJ Massage Therapy may be appropriate if you experience ongoing jaw discomfort, facial tension, headaches, or restricted jaw movement. It can also be an effective complement to treatment provided by your dentist, orthodontist, physician, physiotherapist, or other healthcare professionals.

Your Care at DRMT

At Deep Roots Massage Therapy, our therapists take a comprehensive approach to TMJ treatment by looking beyond the jaw itself. Because jaw dysfunction is often influenced by the muscles of the neck, shoulders, upper back, and posture, your treatment is designed to address the underlying contributors to your symptoms—not just where you feel the pain.

If you’re unsure whether TMJ Massage Therapy is the right choice for you, our team would be happy to help you determine the most appropriate appointment based on your symptoms and treatment goals.
